The project to build a new airport in Texcoco cannot and must not be cancelled by the federal government, said Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon, who is leading a "Plan B" for the construction of the new airport in the same area. However, the new project would mean, "negotiating with farmers in that area, which is two kilometers from Atenco, with whom an inevitable association would have to be made," said Gonzalez de Leon. The "Nuevo Texcoco" (New Texcoco) project is based on a general urban-ecological program for the construction of two parallel runways with a cost of between US$2.2 billion and US$3.2 billion. The airport would have a life span of 25 to 40 years.Gonzalez de Leon called for the government to avoid rejecting the chance of building the airport in Texcoco "until there is a serious study by all those involved," because the Atenco project was technically and economically viable.
